Collins Gulf, part of Savage Gulf State Park located in Grundy and Sequatchie counties, boasts one of Tennessee鈥檚 most breathtaking wilderness areas, encompassing nearly 19,000 acres of the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. The diversity of flowering plants along the Collins Gulf trailhead to Horse Pond Falls is truly remarkable. If you walk this trail from early spring to June, you'll witness the forest transform from brown to white with trillium, turn purple with phacelia, and experience a delightful change in the fragrance of the woods week by week. Personally, I identified over 120 species of flowering plants in just one day in April 2023. This count does not even include the various ferns, mosses, fungi, and salamanders found in the area. I often take small groups of family, friends, and students to explore and appreciate the wonders of Tennessee.

On April 20th, I went on a hike with the General Biology II students. We explored different species of flowers and various classifications of leaves. Additionally, we searched for fungi, lichen, slime mold, and invertebrates.聽

One of the highlights of the trip was Suter Falls, the smaller of the two waterfalls we visited. It was located just across from a narrow bridge and was easy to access.
