The rock鈥檚 surface is marked with caves, springs, waterholes, and ancient Aboriginal rock art. It holds great spiritual significance for the Anangu (鈥淎H-nah-noo鈥�) people, the traditional custodians of the land, and is considered a sacred site.

The red color of the rock, which really pops at dusk, comes from oxidation of the abundant iron within the sandstone making up the monolith.聽

Up close, the rock surface looks similar to scales on a snake, and the texture feels like a rusty beam.聽
