Field Ecology 2025 at the Mirador del Sanatorio, Carlos Durlan
The Sanatorio Carlos Durán, located near the Irazú Volcano in Cartago, was a significant tuberculosis hospital built in 1918 by Dr. Carlos Durán CartÃn, a former Costa Rican president. The high-altitude location was chosen for its clean, fresh air, which was believed to be beneficial for patients with respiratory illnesses. At its peak, the sanatorium housed up to 300 patients and was staffed by nuns from the Sisters of Charity of Santa Anna. As medical advances in antibiotics made sanatoriums for tuberculosis obsolete by the 1960s, the facility later served as an orphanage and a prison. It was ultimately abandoned in the 1970s after sustaining damage from the eruption of the Irazú Volcano. Today, the site stands in ruins and is a popular attraction for visitors, who can explore the historic buildings and enjoy the scenic views.
