Irazu Volcano
In 2025, Field Ecology visited Irazú Volcano, the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, which reaches an elevation of 11,260 feet (3,432 meters) in the Cordillera Central. It is a popular tourist destination, renowned for its multiple craters, including the Diego de la Haya crater, which sometimes holds a vibrant green or blue lake. On exceptionally clear days, visitors at the summit can even see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The volcano is located within Irazú Volcano National Park, which protects the surrounding montane forests and wildlife.
