Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as the听southern magnolia听or听bull bay, is a tree of the family听听native to the听, from听听to central听, and west to听.听Reaching 27.5听m (90听ft) in height, it is a large, striking evergreen tree, with large, dark-green leaves up to听20听cm (7+3鈦�4听in) long and听12听cm (4+3鈦�4听in) wide, and large, white, fragrant flowers up to 30听cm (12听in) in diameter.
Although endemic to the evergreen lowland听听forests on the Gulf and South Atlantic coastal plain,听M. grandiflora听is widely cultivated in warmer areas around the world. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.
Description
Magnolia grandiflora听is a medium to large听听tree which may grow 120听ft (37听m) tall.听It typically has a single stem (or trunk) and a听听蝉丑补辫别.听罢丑别听听are simple and broadly ovate,听12鈥�20听cm (4+3鈦�4鈥�7+3鈦�4听in) long and听6鈥�12听cm (2+1鈦�4鈥�4+3鈦�4听in) broad,听with smooth margins. They are dark green, stiff, and leathery, and often scurfy underneath with yellow-brown听.
The large, showy,听听-scented听听are white, up to听30听cm (11+3鈦�4听in) across and fragrant, with six to 12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring.
Flowering is followed by the rose-colored fruit, ovoid听,听7.5鈥�10听cm (3鈥�3+7鈦�8听in) long, and听3鈥�5听cm (1+1鈦�4鈥�2听in) wide.
Exceptionally large trees have been reported in the far听. The national champion is a specimen in听, that stands 37听m (121听ft). Another record includes a 35-m-high specimen from the Chickasawhay District,听, in听, which measured 17.75听ft (5.4 m) in circumference at breast height, from 1961, and a 30-m-tall tree from听, which reached 18听ft in circumference at breast height.
