Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as thesouthern magnoliaorbull bay, is a tree of the familynative to the, fromto central, and west to.Reaching 27.5m (90ft) in height, it is a large, striking evergreen tree, with large, dark-green leaves up to20cm (7+3⁄4in) long and12cm (4+3⁄4in) wide, and large, white, fragrant flowers up to 30cm (12in) in diameter.

Although endemic to the evergreen lowlandforests on the Gulf and South Atlantic coastal plain,M. grandiflorais widely cultivated in warmer areas around the world. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.

Description

Magnolia grandiflorais a medium to largetree which may grow 120ft (37m) tall.It typically has a single stem (or trunk) and a󲹱.ճare simple and broadly ovate,12–20cm (4+3⁄47+3⁄4in) long and6–12cm (2+1⁄44+3⁄4in) broad,with smooth margins. They are dark green, stiff, and leathery, and often scurfy underneath with yellow-brown.

The large, showy,-scentedare white, up to30cm (11+3⁄4in) across and fragrant, with six to 12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring.

Flowering is followed by the rose-colored fruit, ovoid,7.5–10cm (3–3+7⁄8in) long, and3–5cm (1+1⁄4–2in) wide.

Exceptionally large trees have been reported in the far. The national champion is a specimen in, that stands 37m (121ft). Another record includes a 35-m-high specimen from the Chickasawhay District,, in, which measured 17.75ft (5.4 m) in circumference at breast height, from 1961, and a 30-m-tall tree from, which reached 18ft in circumference at breast height.
