Quercus phellos, the听willow oak, is a North American species of a听听听in the听听group of听. It is native to the south-central and eastern United States.
Description
It is a medium-sized tree growing to 20鈥�30 meters (65鈥�100 feet) tall (exceptionally to 39听m, 128听ft), with a trunk up to听1鈥�1.5听m (3+1鈦�2鈥�5听ft) in diameter (exceptionally听2听m or听6+1鈦�2听ft). It is distinguished from most other oaks by its听, which are shaped like听听leaves,听5鈥�12 centimeters (2鈥�4+3鈦�4听inches) long and听1鈥�2.5听cm (3鈦�8鈥�1听in) broad with an entire (untoothed and unlobed) margin; they are bright green above, paler beneath, usually hairless but sometimes downy beneath. The听听is an听,听8鈥�12 millimeters (5鈦�16鈥�15鈦�32听in) long, and almost as wide as long, with a shallow cup; it is one of the most prolific producers of acorns.听The tree starts acorn production around 15 years of age, earlier than many oak species.
Willow oaks can grow moderately fast (height growth up to 60 cm or 2 ft a year), and tend to be conic to oblong when young, rounding out and gaining girth at maturity (i.e. more than 50 years).
